William Barrett
| Photographer
Studio(s): Bridport
South Street; Bridport
English. b.1816 d.1898 |
William Barrett was born at Budleigh Salterton, near Sidmouth, Devon, in about 1816. He was already working as an artist by 1841 and appears to have spent part of the late 1840s and early 1850s in Paris, where two of his children were born.
By 1859 Barrett was established as an artist in South Street, Bridport, and by 1861 he was described as an “Artist & Photographer”. His studio at 71 South Street produced both portraits and topographical photographs, including stereoscopic and ordinary views of Bridport, Beaminster, Netherbury and other places in the surrounding area. His CDVs include views considerably beyond Bridport, extending into Dorset and neighbouring Devon and Somerset.
Barrett's son, Reginald Douglas Barrett, followed him into photography and was working alongside his father by 1871. The business subsequently traded as Barrett & Son from 71 South Street, continuing after William's death in 1898. William's sisters Angelina and Emily were also photographers and operated a studio at the Butter Market in nearby Lyme Regis.
Barrett is therefore of particular interest as an early regional photographer whose topographical work provides a valuable photographic record of West Dorset and the surrounding area during the 1860s and 1870s. |
